2010 March Highlights


March 1-6th - Coreen Steinbach of Pompey, NY competed in the 2010 World Master Indoor Championships in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada.  Steinbach finished 2nd in the womens 55-59 800meter with a time of 2:46.87, 3rd in the womens 55-59 1500meters with a time of 5:39.67, 3rd in the womens 55-59 8000meter run with a time of 37:07, and helped the United States Women 50+  4 X 200 replay team to a third place finish. 

March 5th - Columbia Last Chance Meet, Armory Track & Field Center, New York, NY, Kyle Heath of Syracuse ran 4th in section 4 of the Men's Mile in 3:59.83, Brad Miller of University of Syracuse, was 5th in 4:00.93, and Riley Miller of Syracuse ran 6th in section 3 with 4:09.53.

2010 February Highlights


Februrary 28th - New Orleans, LA, Rock 'n' Roll Mardi Gras Half Marathon, Anthony Gallo of Harpursville, NY captured 7th overall 1:06:17.  There were 9,000 finishers including the overall winner Martin Lel in 1:01:07 and 2008 Olympic Marathon Champion Sammy Wanjiru in 1:01:33.

February 27-28th - Seven Niagara Open athletes qualified for the 2010 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, NM, while only four compete.  Michael McCadney of Rochester placed 8th in the the Men's Triple Jump with a jump of 16.99m, Sheldon Battle of Buffalo placed 7th in the Men's Shot Put with a throw of 19.17m, Jesse Doty of Syracuse Chargers placed 11th in the Men's 35# Weight Throw with a throw of 20.67m, Miranda Melville of Rush placed 6th in the Women's 3000 Meter Race Walk with a time of 15:09.71, Olympic Silver Medalist Jennifer (Stuczynski) Suhr of Churchville scratched from the Women's Pole Vault, Nick Stenuf of the Syracuse Chargersdid not declare for  the Men's 1500 Meter Run, Kyle Heath of Syracusedid not declare for the Men's 3000 Meter Run.  Scott Bickham, 43, of Corning ran 2:55.88 and placed 4th in the Masters Men 1000 Meter Run, which was held as an exhibition event. huddle_xc.jpg

February 13th - Spokane, WA - Niagara athlete Molly Huddle of Providence, RI finishes 2nd with a time of 26:01 at the 2010 USA Cross Country Championships.  Huddle earned a spot to represent the Team USA in Bydgoszcz, Poland at the 2010 Word Cross Country Championships. See Flotrack interview .

kyle_heath_indoor_3k.jpgFebruary 13th - Boston University Valentine Invitational, Boston, MA, Kyle Heath of Syracuse beat a talented field winning the Men's 3000 Meter Run in 8:02.82 and qualified for US Indoor Championships. See Flotrack interview.

February 13th - Cornell University Kane Invitational, Ithaca, NY, Katie Aldridge of Alpine finished 6th in the Women's Mile in 5:05.44, Jennifer Dorr placed 3rd in the Women's 3000 Meter Run in 10:12.30, Trisha Byler of Rochester finished 3rd in the Women's 5000 Meter Run in 18:07.07, Joel Hanlon of the Syracuse Chargers placed 4th in the Men's 3000 Meter Run in 8:51.70, Neal Holtschulte of Rochester won the Men's 5000 Meter Run in 14:44.23, and Chad Byler of Rochester placed 15th running 15:49.77 in the Men's 5000 Meter Run.

February 13th - Akron University Invitational , Akron, OH, Dennis Pollow of Buffalo placed 3rd in the Men's 3000 Meter Run in  8:12.95.

February 6th -
Boston, MA., Alex Hatz of Fayetteville-Manlius High School runs 4:12:08 and wins the Boy's Junior Mile at 2010 Boston Indoor GamesHatz ran a 2 second victory over a very talented field - they ran 64 seconds for each of the first 3/4 mile and kicked in 60 last 400.  See Flotrack video interview, Alex Hatz 1st Junior Mile 2010 BIG

February 3rd - USATF Foundation Elite Athlete Development Grant was  awarded to shot putter Sheldon Battle of Buffalo.  Battle was one of 26 athletes to receive a $4,000 grant award and one of 17 repeat grantees.

2010 January Highlights


January 29-30th - Boston University Terrier Invitational, Boston, MA, Nick Stenuf of the Syracuse Chargers finished 2nd in the men's mile with 4:03.11, Corey Robinson of Rochester, attending SU, finished 3rd in the men's 3000 meters with 8:07.31, Jordan Davis of Clinton finished 8th with 8:11.31, and two other SU athelets, Pat Dupont of Fairport finished 15th in 8:24.97 and Zach Rivers of Victor 17th in 8:55.00.

January 29-30th - Penn State National Invitational, University Park, PA, Reggie Rucker of Buffalo, finished 3rd in the men's 60 meter hurdles with 7.85, Dennis Pollow of Buffalo, placed 5th in the men's 5000 meters with 14:24.95, Erik Van Ingen of Binghamton won the men's mile in 3:59.58, and Maureen McCandless of Hummetstown, PA finished 4th in the women's 3000 meters with 9.10.15.

January 17th
- Phoenix, AZ, P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, Jeffrey Eggleston of Flagstaf, AZ (formally of Greece) places 6th overall and runs 2:14:32 in his marathon debut, which is a 92.8 % age-graded performance.



January 16th - Doug Raymond Invitational at Kent State University Field House, Kent, OH, Reggie Rucker, of Buffalo, won the men's 60 meter hurdles in 7.86 and Sheldon Battle of Buffalo won the men's shot pu with a throw of 19.43 meters.

Congratulations to Laurel Burdick of Manlius, pictured left winning 2009 HMRRC's Gazette Stocdavis_stockadeathon_2009.jpgkade-athon 15 km in November, and Jordan Davis of Clinton, pictured right, were named New England Runner Magazine's 2009 New York Female and Male Runner of the YearMolly Huddle of Providence, RI (formally of Elmiria) was named Rhode Island Female Runner of the Year.   James Derrick of Big Flats was selected as New York's Master Male Runner of the Year, Carl Grimm of Rochester at 70+ Male, Kyle Heath of Farmington as College Track Male, Katie Hursey of Syracuse as Collegiate XC Female,and Alex Hatz of Manlius as High School Track Male. Several Niagara runners received Honorable Mentions: Kyle Heath of Farmington, Aaron Robertson of Rouses Point, and Bryan Morseman of Addison.

December Highlights


club_xc_2009_logo.pngDecember 12th, Lexington, KY, 11th annual USATF National Club Cross Country Championships took place Masterson Station Park.  Serena Burla of Ellisville, MO won the Open womens 6 km with a time of 20:23.  The Boulder Running Comapny/Adidas won the women's meet by scoring 79 points.  The Niagara Association was represented by the Syracuse Chargers with a 15th place finish with 419 points, VM Project with a 19th place finish with 542 points, & the Brockport Distance Project with a 25th place finish with 631 points.  The top Niagara Association finishers were Sascha Scoclubxc_09.jpgtt, Syracuse Chargers, finished 36th with a time of 21:42 and Cait Bradley, Syracuse Chargers, finished 60th with a time of 22:05.  The Men's 10 km race was dominated by Zap Fittness, they won the meet with 60 points, lead by overall winner David Jankowski with a time of 29:18.  The Syracuse Chargers men's team finished 28th out of 42 clubs with 769 points, lead by Aaron Robertson with a 70th place finish with a time of 31:34 along with Ryan Mulcahy finished 128th with a time of 32:34.  The Genesee clubxc_m_2009.jpgValley Harriers were scheduled to bring 50 athletes by bus to run in the open and master's races, but delayed for 12 hours in traffic on the NYS Thruway and later at the PA border due to the sevre snow storm, which caused them to cancel their trip and return to Rochester.  The Genesee Valley Harriers have been the most active Niagara club paricipating in the annual Club Cross Country Championships.  Jordan Zwick was the lone Genesee Valley Harrier who made it to the race who finished 231 with a time of 34:04 - he flew in from Florida.

ca_inter_marathon_2009.jpgDecember 6th, Sacramento, CA Emily LaSala of Jamesville finished 8th overall women at the 27th Annual California International Marathon.  LaSala ran 2 hours 50 minutes 16 seconds, which was a new PR by over 30 minutes for LaSala.  The women's winner was Deba Buzunesh of Ethiopia, now living in Bronx, NY who ran 2:32:17.

2009 November Highlights

November 26th, Manchester, CT, 73rd Manchester Road Race, 4.748 Miles, Jordan Davis and Kyle Heath of Syracuse lined up with 13,000 Thanksgiving Day runners, Davis finished 15th in 22:40 and Heath was 20th in 23:31.  Haron Lagat of Kenya won the men's race in 21:40 and Alemtsehay Misganaw of Ethiopia won the women's race in 25:26. 

November 26th, Maureen McCandless finishes 2nd with a time of 52:05 at the 100th Run for Diamonds.  The Run For the Diamonds is a 9 mile Road Race held on thanksgiving in Berwick, PA.  The overall women's winner was Heidi Peoples of Scranton, PA with a time of 50:35.  Syracuse Charger's Danielle Hunt of Pittsford, NY finishes 5th overall with a time of 55:54.

November 26th, San Jose, CA, Jeff Eggleston, pictured left in the sunglasses and Brooks uniform, finished 10th overall in a very talented field at the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 5 km.  Eggleston ran a 14:11, which is a new PR for him.  The overall winner was Julius Kogo with a time of 13:39.

November 23rd, LaVern Gibson Championship Course, Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, Terra Haute, IN, hosted by Indiana State University, the Division I Cross Country Championships. The Unversity of Syracuse men's team finished 14th out of 31 schools in the 10 km, led by Alfred Kipchumba 12th in 29:51, Josh Osoro 57th in 30:37, Trevor Dunbar 64th in 30:42, Tommy Betterbed 84th in 31:02, and Matt Frerker 177th in 32:21.  Oklahoma State captured the men's team title.  The men's overall winner was Samuel Chelanga of Liberty who ran a course record 28:41.  The Syracuse women's team was 18th out of 31 schools in the 6 km, led by Lisa Koll 11th in 20:16, Aliphine Tuliamuk 68th in 21:12, Betsy Saina 114th in 21:36, Semehar Tesfaye 116th in 21:37, and Grace Kemmey 137th in 21:50.  Big East rivial Villanova captured the women's team title and Angela Bizzarri of Illinois, pictured right, won the overall title in 19:47. November 21 - Sandra Goettleman of SUNY Geneseo finishes 18th with a time of 22:33 at the Division III Cross Country Championship.  Goettleman performance lead SUNY Geneseo to a 9th place out of 32 schools with 320points.  In the men's race the defending Division III Cross Country Champions SUNY Cortland finished 5th with 232 points.  Cortland was lead by Kyle O'Brien who finished 17th overall with a time of 25:52.  SUNY Geneseo finished 6th with 272 points. 
 

heath_xc_2009.jpgNovember 15th, Kyle Heath, pictured left, and Cait Bradley, pictured right accepting 1st placec_bradley_xc_2009.jpg award, win Niagara Association Open Cross Country Championships at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua. Under cloudy skys, but 60 degree weather, the Upstate NY XC Series' final event for 2009 had 80 women competing in the women's 3.9 mile race and 146 men in the 8 km race.  In the Women's race Nana Sangbender of Syracuse won running a 23:47 with Cait Bradley of Clinton taking second by running a 23:49, Emily LaSala of Jamesville finished 3rd with a time of 24:15, and Sascha Scott of Syracuse in 4th with a time of 24:24.   In the Club Competition the Syracuse Chargers won by scoring 35 points.  2nd place was the VM Project with 55 point lead by Jenny Acker who finished 5th overall with a time of 24:32.  3rd place was the Brockport Distance Project with 72 points, which edged out the Genesee Valley Harriers who were 4th with 73 points.  5th place was the Syracuse Track Club with 109points.   In the Mens race Kyle Heath of Syracuse, NY won his third USATF Niagara Championship by running a 25:55.  Neal Holtschulte of Rochester finished 2nd with a time of 26:13 followed by Ryan Pauling of Rochester with a time of 26:25. Holtschulte and Pauling helped lead the Genesee Valley Harriers to a Niagara team victory.  The Genesee Valley Harriers captured the club title with 24 points over the Syracuse Track Club who scored 31 points .  The Syracuse Track Club was lead by Mike Melfi of Clay, NY with a time of 27:54.

November 14th,  The Unviersity of Syracuse Men and Women both won the NCAA Division I Cross Country Northeast Regional race which earns them a birth at the National Championship race on November 22nd at Terre Haute, Indiana.  The men were lead by Fairport, NY Native Pat Dupont who finished 5th overall with a time of 31:09.  The Syracuse men scored 55points which beat out Iona, which scored 59points.  The University of Cornell finished 7th with 235 points, University of Binghamton were 8th with 259points, and University of Buffalo were 13th with 379points.  The Unveristy of Syracuse women won with 59points over the Unversity of Providence, which scored 70 points.  Syracuse was lead by Katie Hursey who won the womens race and ran 21:57 for the 6km race.  The Cornell women finished 6th with 153 points, Unveristy of Buffalo was 25th with 678 points, Binghamton was 26th with 681 points, and Canisius was 28th with 689 points.  

November 14th, The Unveristy of Cortland won the Men's Division III Atlantic Region meet at Letchworth State Park.  SUNY Cortland scored 49points to win the meet.  SUNY Geneseo took 2nd place with 64points.  Both Cortland and Geneseo earned a spot at Nationals along with the Rochester Inst. Of Technology which finished 4th with 147points.  In the women's race Suny Geneseo finished 2nd with 74points.  The Ithaca College women finished 4th with 163 points.  These two women's teams along with the mens team which qualified will compete next sautrday at Baldwin-Wallace College in Cleveland, OH at the Division III National Cross Country Championships.         
 
November 1st, Bryan Morseman of Addison, NY finishes 25th overall with a time of 2:23:50 at the ING New York Marathon.  The ING New York Marathon also served as the 2009 USATF Men's Marathon Championships, which Morseman took 15th place.

2009 October Highlights 



mayors_cup_start_2009.jpgOctober 26th, Franklin Park, Boston, MA, 20th Annual Mayor’s Cup Cross Country Races, Men's 8 km & Women's 5 km, Genesee Valley Harriers had a fantastic 3rd place team showing with 96 points edging out the New York Athletic Club by two points, won by New Balance Boston scoring 75 points with there top 5 runners, and Boston Athletic Association was 2nd with 78 points.  Genesee Valley Harriers were lead by Macklin Chaffee 11th overall in 24:48, Neal Holtschulte 20th in 25:08, Jordan Zwick 39th in 25:59, Fontana Fluke 40th in 26:01, and Dan Moore 61st in 26:32.  Syracuse Chargers team finished 6th with 118 points lead by Justin Wood in 25:01, Aaron Robertson 21st in 25:11, Ryan Mucahy 41st in 26:02, Ted Turner 48th in 26:16, and Chris Popovici 73rd in 27:02.  Jesse Mang of Buffalo ran unattached finished in 33rd place in 25:48 and Lancaster resident Dan Giza finished in 60th in26:32.  The men’s overall winner was Sean Quigley in 23:54 who out kicked Jacob Korir in 23:55.  The women’s 5 km was was won by Irene Kimaiyo running away in 16:39.  Syracuse Chargersgvh_womens_team_mayors_cup_2009.jpg Women's Team took 4th place led by Amanda LoPiccolo who finished 15th overall in 18:25, teammate Cait Bradley of Clinton, was 17th in 18:29, Danni Hunt 33rd in 19:03, Heather Webster 34th in 19:05, Marie Parks 43rd in 19:25, and Sascha Scott 46th in 19:28.  Genesee Valley Harriers women's team finished 7th lead by Jessica Snyder 23rd in 18:36.

October 25th,
Ithaca College, Ithaca, 2009 USATF Niagara Masters 6 km Cross Country Championship hosted by Pete Glavin's Upstate NY XC SeriesJim Derick of Big Flats and Yvette DeBour of Ithaca claimed Niagara titles in their respective races.  Yvette DeBour covered the muddy and hilly 6 km course in a time of 26:00, while Jim Derick finished with a time of 22:04.  USATF Niagara wanted to reward the top 4 masters men and women performances by age grading, the women’s Age Grading results overall winner was Suzanne Myette, 52 of Binghamton, in 27:49 and age graded 75.51%, 2nd was Yvette DeBour, 46 in 26:00 and age graded 75%, 3rd place was Sharon Moore 55, of Rochester, in 29:24 and age graded  74.16% and  4th place Gillian Sharp, 48 of Ithaca, in 27:53  and age graded 71.54%.  The Top 4 Age Grading Masters Men was highlighted by the overall master’s winner Jim Derick, 44, in 22:04 and age graded to 77.43%, 2nd place was Rick Hoebeke, 60 of Trumansburg, in 25:08 and age graded 77.35%, 3rd place Mark Rybinski 54, of Manlius, in 23:57 and age graded 77.28%, and Dave Bischoff 47, of Fairport, in 22:53 and age graded 76.43%.  

09_hospice_2.jpgOctober 17th, Hilton, the 14th Annual Run for Hospice 5 km & 10 Milewittnessed six men breaking the15 minute mark.   Jeff Eggleston, pictured left, won his second Hospice 5 km title in 14:26, just 4 seconds off of his best time.  Eggleston and Men's LDR Chair Kyle Heath ran together through 2 miles when Eggleston pulled away.  Heath finished 2nd in 14:41, Mark Andrews, 38 of Rochester, 3rd in 14:44, and Dan Giza of Lancaster, plaed 4th in 14:48.  The 5 km Women’s Champion was Emily Tallen of Kingston, Ontario who ran 16:55, followed by fellow 42 year old Canabyler_hospice_2009.jpgdian Paula Wiltse in 17:22.  The Top American and USATF Niagara Association member was Karen Blodgett of Fairport, finished 3rd in 17:43 edgeing out Heather Webster of Honeoye Falls, (17:51) and Vanessa Martell of Penfield, (17:53).  The 10 mile race was won by Trisha Byler, pictured right, of Henrietta in 1:03:52 and Ryan Pauling of Rochester in 52:40.

October 12th,
Boston, MA, Molly Huddle, pictured left, contiuned a strong running season and third national title for 2009 by winning the Tufts Health Plan 10 km for Women, which served as the USATF Women’s National Championship.  Huddle
lopiccilo_adams_2009_tufts.jpgrepeated as the USATF 10 km Women’s Champion by running 32:07, 5 seconds better than Genoveva Kigen of Kenya who ran 32:12.  Syracuse Charger and AADP receiptent Amanda Lopiccolo, pictured right with Adams, finished 31st overall and 26th in the Women’s National Championship running 35:26 despite being troubled by a heel injury the past few months.  Charger teammate Jen Adams of Troy finished right behind LoPiccolo running 35:26.  Other USATF-Niagara finisher’s were Sascha Scott of Syracuse ran a 37:37 for 50th place and Murphee Hayes of Marathon finished in 65th place in 38:27.  The Syracuse Chargers finished 3rd in the team title.

baahalfmarathon2009_logo.jpgOctober 11th, Boston, MA, Jeff Eggleston of Flagstaff, AZ finished third overall at the 9th Annual B.A.A. Half Marathon with a time of 1:04:16.  Eggleston ran a smart race which led to his impressive third place performance.  Eggleston’s first 10 km of the half marathon was just under 31 minutes, made his move in the 2nd half of the race by running the last 10 km of the race under 30 minutes and moved into 3rd place around the 11 mile mark by passing John Korir of KenyaThe overall winner was Martin Fagan with a time of 1:02:21.

October 4th
, Syracuse, NY, 17th annual Syracuse Festival of Races 5 km hosted the 2009 USATF National Masters

Patty Murray-Albo, pictured right, 44, of Boulder, CO ran 17:23 was crowned the overall women's masters champion and finished 6th in the age grading with a 91.04% performance.  The overall Masters Age grading champion was Sabra Harvey, 60, Hosuston, TX ran 19:31 and age graded 99.12%.  The top 7 women all age graded above 90%, including Helen Botti, 72, Kenmore, NY ran 25:40, age graded 90.87%, and won her age group.  Botti’s performance earned her a $200 USATF Niagara Time incentive Bonus by age grading above 90% for the third time in 2009.  The 2009 Niagara Women’s 5km Champion was Yvette de Boer, 46, Ithaca, who ran 19:25.  Other notable Niagara Masters finishers were Linda Eberly, 69, Cortland, ran 24:56 and age graded 88.91%, Coreen Steinbach, 58, Pompey, ran 21:36 and age graded 87.09%, Suzanne Myette, 52, Binghamton, ran 20:03 and age graded 86.55%, and Marliyn Williams, 75, Ithaca, ran 34:25 and won both the national & Niagara age group titles.  The women’s race was won by Syracuse Charger, Amanda LoPiccolo, 26, Oneonta, who cruised to a 21 second victory in 17:02.
wade_sfor.jpgSean Wade, pictured left, 43, Houston, TX finished 4th overall running 14:52 to win the 2009 National Masters Men's title.  Masters runner up was Peter Magil, 48, South Pasadena, CA finished 6th overall in 15:00 and won the overall Masters Age Grading title with a 96.88% worldjim_derick.jpg class performance.  The Niagara Masters Champion was Jim Derick, pictured right, 44, Big Flats, finished 22nd overall in 15:55 and earned his 3rd Niagara Masters title for 2009 despite not running for 4 weeks due to a knee injury.  Other notable Niagara Masters finishers were James Robinson, 55, Rochester, ran 17:17 and age graded 88.99%, Mark Rybinski, Manlius, ran 17:13 and age graded 88.52%, Charlie Andrews, 52, Rochester, ran 17:01 and age graded 88.21%, Bob Nugent, 49, Binghamton, ran 16:42 and age graded 87.68%, and Ted Sullivan, 77, Williamsville, Richard Sullivan, 81, Buffalo, and Henry Sypiewski, 91, Cheektowaga, each winning National Age Group Titles.  Sypiewski set yet another new world record by being the fastest 91 yr old to finish a 5km race in 38:47.  It was a fast day in Syracuse as 17 masters men runners age graded over 90 percent, which is considered world class.  The overall men's winner Niagara Men’s Long Distance Chairman Kyle Heath, 23, Syracuse, who ran away from the strong field by running a 14:21.

2009 September Highlights


5th_ave_mile_finish.jpgSeptember 26th, Farmington, NY native Kyle Heath ran in the Professional Men’s race at the Fifth Ave Mile in New York City.  Heath finished 16th out of 22 elite runners, running a 4:01.1.  The men’s winner was Andy Baddeley of Great Britain who ran a 3:51.8.  The race was loaded with the top USA runners such as Bernard Lagat, Matt Tegenkamp, and Chris Solinsky.  

September 20th, Providence, RI, there was a strong showing for Niagara Association runners at the CVS/Care
mark cvs_logo.gifDowntown 5 km, which served as the USA 5 km Championships, highlighted by the Syracuse Chargers' men's team winning the overall team title.  The Chargers were lead by Justin Wood, Oneonta, who finished 28th overall with a time of 14:58.   The Chargers had a close tight pack which lead to there team title victory.  Aaron Robertson, Rouses Point, 34th in 15:06, Nick Stenuf, East Syracuse, 35th in 15:06, and Ted Turner, Wappingers Fall, 36th in 15:07.  Other chargers_cvs.jpgnotable Syracuse Chargers were Scott Weeks of Cortland finishing 44th running 15:24 round out their top 5.  Second place team was Rochester based Genessee Valley Harriers lead by Neal Holtschulte, pictured left of Rochester, who finished 25th running a 14:43.  holtschulte_cvs.jpgFontana Fluke of Rochester was the 2nd Genesee Valley Harrier finisher, 38th in 15:10.  The other finishers for GVH who rounded out their scoring team was Jordan Zwick, Rochester, 50th in 15:31, Dan Moore, Lakewood, 61st in 16:09, and Chris Hine, Rochester, 64th in 16:12.  The men’s overall winner was Matt Tegenkamp with a time of 13:57.   On the women’s side of the race the Syracuse Chargers' women’s team finished 2nd overall lead by Amanda Lopiccolo, Oneonta, who ran a 16:52 for 19th place among women, followed by teammate Jennifer Adams, Gansevoort, 30th in 17:22, Alyssa Recny, Cortland, 34th running 17:55.  The women’s winner was Jennifer Rhines who ran 15:31 - Rhines is a native of the Syracuse area now training and living in Mammoth Lakes, CA.  For more CVS event photos please visit George Ross' Digitalphotoconcept.com
 

leaders_10kan.jpgSeptember 19th, the final installment of the Niagara Association Road Running Championships took place for 2009 at the Novelis 10kan indavis_10kan.jpg Oswego, NY, which served as the Niagara Association Fall 10 km ChampionshipsJordan Davis, pictured right of Renson won his first Niagara Championship and also earned a performance time bonus of by running 30:23.  Anthony Gallo, pictured 3rd from left and Chris Thater Memorial 5 km runner up in 2009, of Harpursville, NY was 2nd running 30:41.  Mark Andrews, pictured 2nd from left of Rochester, the Niagara Spring 10 km Champion finished 3rd overall by running 30:58, which also earned him an additional $200 Niagara Time Bonus.  Nathan Lockett of Lansing finished third in the Niagara Championship by running 32:51 and 5th overall.  Mike Melfi, Clay, who finished 7th running 33:11.  On the women’s side of the race Maureen McCandless now living outside of Harrisburg, PA took home the mccandless_finish_10_kan.jpgSpring 10 km Championship honors, she was the Niagara Spring 10 km Champion.  McCandless burdick_10_kan.jpgfinished the 10 km course in a time of 35:19.  Laurel Burdick, picture right of Manlius, was 2nd with a time of 35:45 and Vanessa Martell of Penfield finished 3rd in the Niagara Championship by running 37:24.  The winners for the Masters title was 71 yr old Robert Berrick of Oswego, NY running 57:29 and Lisa Hill of East Syracuse in 46:57.  Each of masters champion earned themselves $100 for winning the Masters Fall 10 km Championship.

September 7th, Fleet Feet Run Into Buffalo 15 km hosted two USATF Championships, USA Masters Chausa_masters_15km_2009.jpgmpionships and Niagara Association Masters Championships.  There were many outstanding performances with 5 masters runners scoring over 90%  Age Graded.  The overall men's winner was Jordan Davis of Renson, NY who ran 46:45.  The men's masters championship was won by word class sensation Paul Aufdemberge 44, of Redford, MI left_to_right_-_charlie_andrews_chris_mattingly_bob_nuggent_john_van_kerkhove.jpgwho ran 46:53 and 95.1% age-graded.   The Niagara Association saw two masters men crack the top 10 age-graded positions: 8th place was Charlie Andrews, pictured left in white singlet following Chris Mattingly, Bob Nuggett, and John Van Kerkhove, 52 of Rochester, NY ran 54:36 and age-graded 87.1% and 9th place was Jim Derick, 43 of Big Flats, NY ran a 51:25 and age-graded 86.7%.  Derick was the Overall Niagara Masters Male, which earned him $100.  Andrews also won the 50-54 age group, Ted Sullivan of Williamsville, NY won the 75-79 age group, Richard Sullivan of Buffalo, NY won the 80-84 age group, and Henry Sypniewski of Cheektowaga the 90-94 age group.  On the women’s side of the race, the overall winner was Salome Kosgei of White Plains, NY who ran an impressive 51:59.  2nd place was Syracuse Charger Amanda Lopiccolo of Oneonta, NY in 55:45.
The Masters Overall Women’s National Champion was Lori Kingsley who won a close race by running a 56:55, 13 seconds faster than Emily Bryans of Schenectady, NY.  72 year old Helen Botti of Kenmore, NY won her age group and finished 2nd overall for the women in the age graded results with her 1:22:16 that age graded 88.5% earning $200.
Other Niagara Association Women who finished in the Top 10 in the Overall Age Grading were: Suzanne Myette, 52 of Binghamton, NY finished 4th with a time of 1:03:06, Patricia Kunselman, 64 of Orchard Park was 6th with a time of 1:16:36, Carolyn Corgel, 52 of Springville, NY was 8th in 1:05:01, and Elizabeth Randell, 43 of Buffalo, NY was 9th with 59:36.  Randell was also crowned our 2009 Niagara Association Masters Women 15 km Champion.  Myette, Kunselman, Botti, and Bueme all won their respective Age Groups. 

20_k_2009_logo.jpgSeptember 7th New Haven, Connecticut saw the 23rd running of the Stratton Faxon New Haven Road Race, which served as the 2009 USA 20 km Championships.  Niagara Association member Jeff Eggleston finished 18th running a 1:02:04, which was about 4:59 mile pace for the 12.4 mile race.  Eggleston time was 37 seconds faster than last years time.  Another Niagara Association member that ran in the Championship and had a Top 20 performance was Fred Joslyn of East Syracuse who finished 20th running a 1:03:04.

2009 August Highlights

August 30th, Binghamton's 26th Annual Chris Thater Memorial 5 km race saw some excellent performances from a few Niagara Association members, two in the Top 10.  Kyle Heath of Syracuse, NY finished 5th running 14:25 while Jeff Eggleston a native of Greece, NY finished 9th running 14:32, and Fred Joslyn, now living in East Syracuse finished 11th with a 15:02.  The Overall winner of the men’s race was 20 year old, Bado Worku Merdessa a native of Ethiopia and now a Bronx resident running a 14:07.  The runner-up was SUNY Geneseo graduated and former Niagara Association member Anthony Gallo of Harpursville, NY running a 14:16 to take 2nd place, which was the best finish by a Non-African at the Chris Thater 5 km race.  With Kyle Heath finishing in the Top 5 it is the first time 2 Americans finished inside the top 5 at this Elite race that boarders within the Niagara Association.  Other notable performances from the men’s side were Dave Bradshaw of Macedon who was 16th running a 15:24 and Scott Weeks of Cortland was 17th running 15:32.  Jim Derick of Big Flats, NY was the 5th place masters finisher running a 16:03.   Amanda LoPiccolo of the Syracuse Chargers finished 9th overall running a 16:43.  LoPiccolo’s 16:43 is the fastest 5km road time for 2009 by a Niagara Association Member at a race within the Association boarders.  The Overall Women’s winner was Buzunesh Deba of the Bronx who ran a 15:58.  Deba two weeks earlier was 5th place at the New York City Half Marathon. pdf 8-30-2009_press__sun_bulletin_article 32.36 Kb  pdf ne_runner_nov-dec_2009_a.gallo 354.70 Kb

huddle_at_10_mile_champ_2009.jpgAugust 22nd, Molly Huddle, pictured left in red top wearing number F-15 of Elmira now living and training in Providence, RI, won her 2nd USA National Road Race Championship title of the year by winning the 2009 USA Women’s 10 Mile Championship at the Crim Festival of Races in Flint, Michigan.  Huddle finished 4th place overall in a very talented women’s field, covering the 10 mile distance in 54:01.  The overall women’s winner of the race was Alemitu Albera who ran 53:49. August 16th, NYC Half Marathon, Jeffrey Eggleston, of Greece pictured right, finished 15th in a talented field in 1:06:34.  Tadese Tola of Ethiopia won in 1:01:06 and Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain won the women's division in 1:09:45.  At the start in Central Park over 10,000 runners participated, running to Times Square. August 9th, Jeffrey Eggleston, 
pictured left wearing sunglasses and yellow/white top and native of Greece, NY is currently training and living in Flagstaff, AZ, finished 18th place at the historic and highly competitive 37th CIGNA Falmouth Road 7 Mile Race with a time of 34:11. The event starts in Woods Hole, winds around the Nobska Lighthouse, runs along the beach at Vineyard Sound, and finishes at Falmouth Heights.  Photo by Photo Run.





August 8th,
Masters runner Jim Robinson of the Genesee Valley Harriers finished 3rd at the World Masters Track & Field
robinson_2009_bronze.jpgChampionship in the 55-59 age group 3000 meter Steeplechase in Lahti, Finland.  Robinson says "I was in 4th place with two laps to go trying to figure out how I was going to get into 3rd. Then, in the bell lap, the Finn who was about 10 meters ahead of me got his steps messed up or something and just stopped in front of the first barrier. While he was trying again I went by him. I got a burst of energy tasting a medal and really ran a good last lap. I ended up closing about 50 meters on Masao Sono of Japan who ran 11:07.51 in 2nd, but never even realizing I had a chance until just before we hit the line. If only I started a few steps earlier. Oh well, like I said I was SO happy to medal. Robinson ran his fastest steeplechase of 2009 by running 11:07.75, which earned him the bronze medal. 


jordan_davis__kyle_heath.jpgAugust 8th, 2009 USATF Niagara Association Open Men's & Women's 5 km Championships was hosted by the Jenny Kuzma Memorial Bergen 5km  where we saw Kyle Heath of Syracuse win his 2nd Niagara Association Championship this year.  Heath dominated the field from the gun, hiting the 1 km mark in 2:46 and 8:31 at 3 km, and went on to win and set a new course record in 14:36.  Retuning 2008 winner Jordan Davis, of Syracuse, pictured left with Heath leading, finished 2nd running a 14:53.  Kyle Heath's performance earned him $750 on the day, $450 for the overall title, $100 Course Record Bonus, and $200 time bonus for running sub 15 minutes - Jordan Davis also earned the $200 time bonus.  Other top performers came from our 2009 10 km Champ Mark Andrews of Fleet Feet/Yellow Jacket Racing and Rochester who was 3rd in 15:06, Chris Muldoon of Buffalo and Genesee Valley Harriers (GVH) was 4th with a 15:11, and 5th place Niagara finisher was Neal Holtschulte of Rochester and GVH who finished 6th overall running a 15:13.  Suny Geneseo Senior Tim Chichester out kicked Holtschulte to finish 5th with a time of 15:13.  The race was highly competitive with 26 men breaking 17 minutes amanda_lopiccolo_finishing_bergen_5km.jpgand the top 10 men were all under 16 minutes, which is the most competitive 5 km race in the Rochester area so far in 2009. 

Amanda LoPiccolo, pictured right, of Syracuse Chargers TC, was crowned  2009 USATF Niagara Association 5 km Women’s Champion by running a 17:25 and setting a new course record.  LoPiccolo lead the talented women's field from the start, went across the first mile in 5:21 while a chase pack of five women were 17 seconds back.  3-Time Defending Champion from West Seneca, Allison Carr, VM Project (VMP), out kicked Vanessa Martell of Brockport Distance Project (BDP) to finish 2nd place with 17:42 - Martell ran 17:44.  4th place was Syracuse Charger Sascha Scott who ran 17:50 and 5th was Karen Blodgett in 17:57.  Other notable females were Trisha Byler,
of Rochester and BDP ran 18:01 and Jenny Acker-Koeppel of Cheektowaga and VMP ran 18:13.  The top 11 women’s times were all under 19 minutes making the women’s field the fastest 5 km so far in Rochester area.

2009 July Highlights


July 25th, Molly Huddle, pictured right of Elmira, NY native and now a resident of Providence, RI, won the 2009 USA huddle_at_bix_2009.jpgWomen's 7 Mile Championship, which was hosted by the Quad City Times Bix 7 in Davenport, Iowa.  Huddle ran 37:39 and was 5 seconds ahead of Serena Burla of Ellisville, Mo.  Jeff Eggleston, of Greece, NY, is a Niagara member who is currently training and living in Flagstaff, AZ finished 13th with a time of 34:27 in the competitive men’s race.  Meb Keflezighi of San Diego, CA was the overall winner who ran away with the race with a time of 32:25, thirty-one seconds faster than runner-up Anthony Famiglietti.  



jenn_dorr_3000_2009.jpgJuly 18th, Jenn Dorr, pictured left, of Scottsville and Kyle Heath of Syracuse won their respective divisions at USATF Niagara Association 3000 Meter Track Championships.  Heath ran 8:25.21 and the effort earned him a $200 Niagara Time Performance Bonus.  Jenn Dorr ran 10:31.42 and picked up $100 first place award.  Brian Lombardo of the Syracuse Chargers was 2nd in the men's race with a time of 8:54.70.  Jim Robinson of the Genesee Valley Harriers captured the Masters title with a time of 10:03.54.

kyle_heath_at_subaru_2009.jpg9th Annual Subaru Buffalo 4 Mile Chase in Buffalo, NY.  Heath's 18:45 earned him top American over Suny Geneseo Graduate and now training in Flagstaff, Arizona Anthony GalloChris Muldoon of Tonawanda ran 19:34 to place in the top 10.  Masters runner James Derick of Big Flats had another strong performance with a 16th place finish and a time of 20:30.  Laurel Burdick was the top US women's finisher with a time of 22:16.  Allison Carr of West Seneca was the 2nd American with a time of 23:02.  Brenda Spillman of Buffalo finished 3rd in the Masters Division with a time of 25:58.

boilermaker_logo.pngJuly 12th, Neal Holtschulte of Rochester, NY was the Top USATF Niagara Male at the 2009 Boilermaker 15 km in Utica, NY.  Holtschulte finished 19th with a time of 47:49.  James Derick of Big Flats, NY was the 4th overall masters with a time 50:44 which placed him 50th.  Amy Fakterowitz of Williamsville, NY was the 4th overall womens masters with a time of 1:03:12.

Keller Field at masters_2009_eventlogo.pngTitan Stadium on the campus of University Of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  Genesee Valley Harriers' Jim Robinson, pictured left, in a very close 1500 finish, won 3 national titles over that weekend, on Friday Robinson won the men’s 50-59 Steeplechase with a time of 11:16.52.  On Saturday Robinson won the men’s 55-59 800 Meter title with a time of 2:13.33, he finished the weekend on Sunday by capturing the men’s 55-59 1500 meter title with a time of 4:36.73.  Robinson will compete on August 8 in Finland at the World Masters Championship.

July 10-11th, The 2009 USATF National Club Track & Field Championships took place at Icahn Stadium on Randall's club_2009_eventlogo.jpgIsland in New York City, NY.  The top USATF Niagara Clubs were Brockport Distance Project (BDP) women's team who finished 5th with 58 points and the Syracuse Chargers Track Club (SCTC) finished 15th with 11 points.  The notable performances were lead by BDP's Vanessa Martell, of Penfield, winning the 10,000 meter run with a time of 37:03.86 in a new meet record, claimed 7th in the 5,000 meter run in 18:04.56, and 2nd in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 11:30.84.  BDP teammate Trisha Byler, pictured above in the steeplechase with Martell in close second, photo by Mike Scott, was 2nd in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 37:20.36 and won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:24.90.  Teri Wilson of BDP was 5th in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 12:20.74.  Jennifer Heim of BDP competed in the discus throw capturing 5th with 38.69 meters and the hammer throw 7th in 42.04 meters.  Sacha Scott of the Syracuse Chargers Track Club was 3rd in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:31.93, awhile teammate Murphee Hayes was 4th in the 10,000 meter run in 37:27.57.

In the Men's side of the Club Championships, Syracuse Chargers Track Club was 18th with 9 points.  The top performers were
Justin Wood, pictured left, photo by Mike Scott, of finishing 2nd in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:24.18, Scott Weeks of SCTC finished 12th in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.53 and Alex Grout, SCTC, finished 8th in the 1500 meter run in 3:57.99.  Chris Muldoon of Genesee Valley Harriers was 11th in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:02.04.

2009 June Highlights

eventlogo.pngJune 28 as the 2009 USA Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships continued on from Hayward Field the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships were held in conjunction at the same historic location.  Recent Hamburg High School graduate Joe Whelan finished in 9:09.97 to claim 2nd in the 3000 Meter Junior Men’s Steeplechase.  Whelan was just ahead of fellow Niagara member and the University of Syracuse Cross Country and Track member Pat Dupont, who ran 9:10.55.  Joe Whelan's day was not done as he also competed in the Junior Men’s 5000 Meter race, a little over hour after the 3000.  Whelan finished in 22nd place in a time of 15:53.

m_melville_eugene_2009.jpgJune 28, Miranda Melville of Rush and 2008 USA Junior Race Walker of the Year, finished 4th in the 20 km Race Walk USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, University of Oregon’s historic Hayward Field, Eugene.  Melville walked a career best time of 1:45:38, covering the second half in 51:37, faster than the first half. University of Wisconsin-Parkside Coach Mike De Witt said, “It was great to see Melville at this National event, walking her first year at the senior distance, walk negative split races and look stronger as the event moved into the later stages.  It is great payoff to see steady improvement for the hours of training that have been put in."

June 27th, the 2009 USATF-Niagara Association 5000 Meter Open & Masters Track Championships took place at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY.  The Men’s
j_wood_5000_6-27-2009.jpgwinner was Justin Wood, pictured right, Syracuse Charger & Head Cross Country Coach SUNY Delhi, won with a time of 14:42.39.  Wood claimed a 5 second victory over runner up Neal Holtschulte of the Genesee Valley Harriers (GVH) with a time of 14:47.65.  Holtschulte lead most of the race and set the early pace by taking the first 1600 meters out in 4:40 and held the lead until 200 meters to go, when Wood passed him and never looked back.  Wood’s victory earned him $100 for 1st place and $200 for breaking 15:00.  Holtschulte's 14:47 and 3rd place finisher Chris Muldoon's, GVH, 14:59 each earned a $200 bonus. Masters athlete Jim Derick of Big Flats, NY cruised to the Masters title and earned himself a $200 bonus by age grading at 88% by running a 15:53.  Other notable Men’s performances were Fontana Fluke who ran 15:15.06 and 19 year old Grand Island resident Chris Carter who will be attending and running cross country at SUNY Geneseo with a time of 15:37.  Our own Niagara Mens LDR Chairman Eric Boyce ran 16:06.28 and finished 8th.

Katie Aldridge, pictured left, Finger Lakes Runners Club, captured the Women’s Open 5000 Title with a time of 17:36.05.  Aldridge took charge from the sound of the gun start and hit the first mile in 5:31.  Masters athlete Katherine Stettler,also of Finger Lakes Runners Club, won the Masters 5000 Title in 19:48.  2nd place Niagara Masters went to Jennifer Rea of Rush, NY who ran 19:59.40. The most impressive performance of the day came from 58 year old Coreen Steinbach who ran a 20:42.81.  Steinbach earned herself a $200 age grading bonus for her efforts at 90.73%, which is the highest age graded performance for any Niagara Masters Runner in 2009. June 25th Championships results saw Michael McCadney finished 9th in the nation at the Triple Jump with a jump of 15.65 meters (51-04.25 feet).
Erik Van Ingen and Amanda LoPiccolo both missed qualifying for the final in their respective 1500 meter events, Van Ingen ran 3:53.73 in his heat and LoPiccolo ran 4:24.08 in her prelim.  Molly Huddle finished 5th in the nation in the 10000 final with 32:43.11.  Watch live coverage at: flotrack.org.

eventlogo.pngTen Niagara Association athletes qualify for 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of University of Oregon, Eugene, OR on June 25-28th.  Jenn Stuczynski, 2008 Silver Medalist, 27 of Chuchville leads the group qualifying in Pole Vault at 4.92 meters.  Jesse Doty, 29 who is living and training in Hillsborough, NC, a longtime Syracuse Chargers member, met the "A" Standard with a Hammer Throw of 72.82 meters.  Sheldon Battle, 26 of Jamestown, who is training and coaching at UB, qualified in Shot Put at 20.13 meters.  Erik Van Ingen, 20 of Marathon and competing for Binghamton University, qualified in the 1500 meters at 3:43:18.  Three-time All-America 400 meter hurdler Joe Greene, 22 of Rochester and SUNY of Albany, qualified at the 400 meter Hurdles with 49:67.  UA Team mate Michael McCadney, 25 of Rochester, hit the Triple Jump with 15.92 meters.  Univeristy of Syracuse's Kyle Heath, 23 of Farmington, qualified, but scratched in 3000 m_melville_2.jpgSteeple Chase with 8:40:05.  Miranda Melville, pictured right, 20 of Rush, hit the 20 km Race-Walk Standard with 1:47:01.  Elmira's 25 year old Molly Huddle qualified in the 10000 meters with 33:17 and will run in Thursday nights final. Maureen McCandless, 26 of Syracuse qualified in 5000 meters at 15:35:31 and Syracuse Chargers'  Amanda LoPiccolo, 27 of Oneonta, qualified in both the 1500 meters at 45:16:48 and 5000 meters at 15:52:70. Also of the State University of New York at Albany and Triple Jumper, Jennifer Gurrant, 22 of Batavia met the Standard with 13.11 meters.

melfi__burdick_2009_jp_morgan_champs.jpgJune 23rd Onondaga Lake Park, Syracuse, NY had there 27th running of their annual Syracuse Chase Corporate Challenge.  Last 2008 & 2005 runner up Mike Melfi of Clay, NY who works for James Ville-Dewitt C.S.D. pulled away from Derek Powers and Greg Stowell to claim a 11 second victory and covered the 3.5 Mile course in 18:22.  On the women’s side Laurel Burdick who works for Fayette-Manlius School district won with a time of 20:03. 

The New York State Track & Field High School Championships took place June 12th and June 13th at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.  Many Niagara region high school athletes participated at the state meet and performed very well.  One of the standout highlights from the weekend was Fayetteville-Manlius Junior Alex Hatz, pictured below, won
hatz_2.jpg Division I State Title in the 1600meter run.  Alex Hatz ran a 4:06 during which was 5 seconds faster than the runner up Chris Carrington of North Rockland.  Hatz came across the half waypoint with about a second lead with a time of 2:06.08, final 2 laps were 101.19 and 58.85, which separated himself from the field enroot to his victory.  In the field events Eric Fontanez of Hilton HS won the high jump by clearing 6 ft 8 inches.  This is Fontanez third straight high jump title - won the title last year, won the title indoor and now won the outdoor title again.  On the girls side sophomore Ashley Fields of Amherst HS captured a state title in the 200 meters in the Division I School along with Melissa Zajdel of Syracuse Christian Brothers Acdemy who captured the 200 meters in Division II Schools.  In the girls' field events a title was captured by Melissa Kurzdorfer of Lancaster HS in the shot put with a throw of 47-9 feet.

June 10th at the 2009 Division I Outdoor Track and Field NCAA Championship, John McDonnell Stadium, University of Arkansas, Syracuse University senior steeplechase runner Kyle Heath, of Farmington, ran 8:40:05 and placed third in his prelim race to qualify for the steeplechase final at 7:45 PM  on Friday. Heath was 6th in the final at the 2008 championship.  Joe Greene of Rochester, competing for SUNY at Albany, ran 50.73 in the 400 meters hurdles prelim and qualified for the semi-final heats.

kyle_heath_menne_divisiontrackathlete_2009.jpgJune 8th Syracuse University senior steeplechase runner Kyle Heath, of Farmington, was named Northeast Division Men's Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. "It is a great honor to receive an award that is given out to only a select group," Heath said. "It's weird to think that this is the end of the road at Syracuse and this weekend marks my final competition for the Orange. I know that I won't win every award, but I tried to do everything I could to make Syracuse a place prospective distance runners want to come to and make a name for themselves."  Heath will be competing in the steeplechase at the 2009 Division I Outdoor Track and Field NCAA Championship at the University of Arkansas, on June 10th.

June 5th, Friday evening in downtown Rochester was the 2nd Annual Downtown Fitness Club East End Festival Mile.  Niagara member Kaitlyn O'Sullivan of Syracuse won the wome's race and established a new course record with a time of 4:56.  Neal Holtschulte of Rochester was the top Niagara finisher with a time of 4:25.  Defending Champion Jon Molz of East Northport repeated and set a new course record by running a 4:24. Jim Derick of Big Flats captured the Masters title with an outstanding time of 4:42.

June 4th at Delaware Park in Buffalo, NY saw the annual running of the Buffalo JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge.  The top 3 men finishers are all USATF-Niagara Members.  Chris Muldoon of Tonawanda and running for Crowley Webb & Associates claimed his third straight title with a time of 17:24.  Brian Lombardo, also of Tonawanda, was 2nd in 17:48.  Masters standout runner Chris Mattingly of Orchard Park finished 3rd overall in 18:17.  On the women side, 2007 JP Morgan Champion Amy Fakterowitz of Williamsville finished 3rd with a time of 21:36.  The 2009 women's winner was Jennifer Acker in 20:18.

2009_freihofers_logo.gifMay 30th in Albany, NY at the 31st running of the Freihofer's Run for Women 5km, Kaitlin O'Sullivan of Syacuse was the top Niagara Association finisher placing 24th in 17:23, follwed by Jenn Adams of Gansevoort was 29th in 17:47, Alyssa Recny of Cortland finished 33rd in 17:57, and Vanessa Martell of Penfield who was 34th in 17:58. O'Sullivan led the Syracuse Chargers Track Club team to top 1st place team honors while Brockport Distance Project team led by Martell took 4th place, and Genesee Valley Harriers place 7th. photo by Victah Sailor

May 30th at the Reebok Grand Prix Outdoor Trak & Field, Icahn Stadium, New York, NY, 2008 Beijing Olympic silver medalist Jenn Stuczynski of Churchville won the women's pole vault in 4.81 meters/15 feet 9.25 inches, besting Stacy Dragila , 2000 Olympic gold medalist, 4.52 meters.  Maureen McCandless of Syracuse placed 10th in the women's 5000 meter run in 16:23:27.

May 28th on the campus of RIT in Henrietta, NY saw the 19th running of the Rochester JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge.  Last y2009_trisha_byler_jp_morgan.jpgears runner up Neal Holtschulte of Rochester and running for Klein Steel won this year's event with a time of 17:01 (the 2nd fastest time on the RIT 3.5 mile USATF Certified course).  Former JP Morgan Champion Dave Bradshaw of Macedon was 2nd in 17:15.  6 of the top 8 finishers were all USATF-Niagara members.  3rd place was Chad Byler of Henrietta running 17:46, 4th place Dan Moore of Lakewood ran 17:53, 7th was Bergen's own Eric Boyce in 18:22, 8th was Jim Derick of Big Flats in 18:38.  The mens race was very com2009_neal_holtschulte_jp_morgan.jpgpetitive and there were quite a few fast times despite the heavy rain during the race.  The women's race was won by Trisha Byler running for Danisco US, pictured right, of Henrietta in a time of 20:32.  Byler claimed 12 second victory over Sarah Nazarian-Elliot of Fairport, and 3rd place was Jessica Snyder of Rochester ran 21:14.

                                                                                                                          
mark-andrews-2009-spring-10.jpgMay 17th, Highland Park, Rochester, NY at the Medved Lilac 10 km/USATF Niagara Association 2009_lilac_10_km_logo.jpgChampionships, Mark Andrews of Henrietta (pictured left) was back in form to win the Open Men's Championship in 31:14 and placed 3rd overall.  Maureen McCandless of Syracuse easily won the Open Women's Championship in 33:41, which was the fastest women's time since 1990. Chris Mattingly of Orchard Park won the Masters Men's Championship with a time of 34:25 and Amy Fakterowitz of Williamsville won the Masters Women's Championship running 40:29.  1164 finishers.


May 9th, Grand Rapids, Michigan at the Fifth Third River Bank 25 km USA National Championships, Katie Aldridge of Alpine, NY finishes 13th with a time of 1:35:55.

   
May 3rd, Spokane Washington at the 33rd Annual Lilac Bloomsday 12 km, Jeff Eggleston of Greece, NY finished 20th running 36:52.
                                                                                                                               
h_botti__boyce_5-2-09.jpgryan-pauling-2009-half-mara.jpgMay 2nd, Beaver Island State Park, Grand Island, NY, Ryan Pauling (pictured left) & Trisha Byler, both of Rochester, won their respective Open Divisions at the Greater Buffalo Track Club Grand Island Half Marathon/USATF Niagara Association Championships, Pauling's time was a new course record of 1:10:24 and Byler ran 1:24:41.   In the Maters Division was highlighted by Helen Botti's, of Kenmore, (picture here with Men's LDR Chair Eric Boyce) age-graded performance of 89.97% running 1:58:12 at 72 years young.  Guy George of Amherst won the Masters Men's Championship with a time of 1:13:58 and Elizabeth Randell won the Masters Women's Championship running 1:23:23.   304 finishers in the half marathon.
