USATF Annual Meeting HOT Topic
12/3/2011, St. Louis, MO - USATF Annual Meeting News
Following meetings on Friday with the Athletes Advisory Committee and
USATF Club Council, USA Track & Field has revised its uniform
guidelines for 2011 USATF Fall Cross Country Championships, commonly
referred to as the Club Cross Country Championships.
Recognizing the unique needs of clubs and the nature of the
Championships, IAAF logo restrictions will not be in place. Uniform
regulations in USATF Rule 253 will remain in force, requiring team
uniforms to be similar in color and style.
This topic has been discussed hotly on Flotrack.org, and has been a
point of contention with Athletes seeking more sponsors outside the big
names that have long been the primary sponsors of the sport and
therefore have requested certain exclusivity rights for logo placement.

2011 November Highlights
November 30th, 2011 INDIANAPOLIS - Dave Talcott(Owego,
N.Y.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after
meeting the qualifying standard for the men’s 50 km U.S. Olympic Team
Trials - Race Walk at the Ohio Last Chance 50k in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

| © Tina Peters |
Talcott finished under the standard of 4:45 with time to spare as he walked the 50 km (31.25 miles) distance in 4:42:21. Talcott finished second to Mike Mannozzi who already secured the standard.
Talcott qualified for his first Olympic Trials at the age of 51. Talcott’s wife Erin Taylor-Talcott
made headlines earlier this year for meeting the standard for the men’s
50 km trials. Taylor-Talcott plans to walk in the men’s trials even
though the event is not offered for women at the Olympic Games. When
both Talcotts step to the line at the 50 km trials in Santee, Calif. in
January, it will be the first time a husband and wife pair will compete
in the trials.
“It is really great,” Talcott said of training with his wife. “We train
really well together even if we are working out separately. We have a
nice rivalry. If she goes out and has a great workout, then I’ll try to
go out and do just a little better - but it is a friendly rivalry.”
Talcott has been race walking for more than 30 years and continues to
see improvement in his performances. After not walking at the USA
Outdoor Championships since 1983, Talcott qualified and walked this
summer in the 20 km event. Talcott also donned the USA jersey for the
first time this October as a member of the Team USA at the Pan American
Games.
Now in its tenth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed
to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF
names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org . Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2011 October Highlights
October 30th - Guadalajara, Mexcio - Eggleston DNF due to illness in Marathon at Pan American Games
USATF Niagara member, Jeffery Eggleston (Greece, N.Y.) dropped out of the Pan-Am Games marathon due to illness, according to Dr. Gloria Beim, chief medical officer for Team USA.
Patrick Rizzo of Team USA finished eighth in the men’s marathon in two hours, 21 minutes, 58 seconds on the final day of competition at the XVI Pan American Games Sunday.
Rizzo, 28, said he didn’t have any problem with the mile high altitude (elevation 5,138 feet) for the race, which included four laps on a 10,000-meter course along Avenue Vallarta by the Arcos de Guadalajara Monument to downtown Guadalajara.
“This is the same elevation as my hometown of Boulder (Colorado),” said Rizzo. “So, I’ve been training in close to the same conditions we had here today. I executed exactly what I was planning to but the outcome was just different than I expected.”
Brazil’s Solonei Silva, 19, earned the gold medal, winning in 2:16.37 under sunny skies with the temperature reaching a high of 74 degrees during the race. Columbia’s Diego Colorado (2:17.13) and Juan Cardona (2:18.20) claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Rizzo at 10k (33:11)...20k (1:06.28)...30k (1:40.11)...40k (2:14.23).
Jeff Eggleston, Greece, N.Y., did not finish: “I got a virus a couple days ago, so I hadn’t been feeling great. I decided to see how it went today and by 30k I still wasn’t feeling great. I just wanted to see how the race played out. The longer it went on the worse I felt. We had great support from our staff in getting us fluids and staying hydrated and I think that kept me in as long as I possibly could.
“This was very nice venue and extremely great crowd support. Guadalajara was a very benevolent host for the Pan American Games and I was very impressed.”
October 29th - Guadalajara, Mexico - Talcott DQ'ed in Pan American Games 50k Race Walk
USATF Niagara member, David Talcott (Owego, N.Y.), the oldest competitor in the field at 51 years age, was disqualified after picking up a red card at the 6,500-meter mark. Ben Shorey of Team USA finished ninth in the men’s 50k race walk in four hours, 33 minutes, 25 seconds at the XVI Pan American Games Saturday.
The mile high altitude (elevation 5,138 feet), coupled with 94 percent humidity, proved detrimental in the 25-lap race contested on a 2,000-meter course along Avenue Vallarta by the Arcos de Guadalajara Monument.
“The crowd was just amazing,” said Talcott. “The people down here are great. They just love the sport.”
“I felt fine. The whole first 20k I’m just hitting splits saying this is easy,” said Shorey, 28, who resides in Kenosha, Wis. “But when I hit 21k it literally felt like I threw a 20-pound backpack on and then I actually started having a hard time breathing and I said to myself ‘yea, that would be the altitude. I still have 30k to go. This is not good.’”
Shorey had set a personal best of 4:16.01 en route to winning the 2011 50k race walk national championship in Tustin, Calif., Jan. 23.
Of the 16 race walkers that started, three did not finish, while Talcott was among the four who were disqualified.
Spurred by the partisan cheering crowd, Mexico’s Horacio Nava and Jose Ojeda captured the gold (3:48.58) and silver (3:49.16) medals, respectively. Jaime Quiyuch from Guatamela earned the bronze medal in 3:50.33.
“I have to say this was close to the best crowd I’ve ever experienced in this event,” said Shorey. “By the middle of the race, I’m sure we were four-deep all the way down. I think other than cheering for their team - Mexico - I think they cheered for us second most. It was unbelievable.”
TEAM USA QUOTES
Dave Talcott, Owego, N.Y., disqualified at 6,500m: “The course was really nice with wide turns; anything a walker could dream for. The crowd was just amazing. I felt I would do a little better. I was disqualified just once before in high school back in 1977 and since then I’ve really been clean as far as race walking technique. So I was shocked when I started getting calls today for not straightening my legs.
“I did the first lap exactly like I wanted to do. I wanted to walk fast..so I was right on pace on the first lap but on the second lap it was taking me a little more effort than I thought it was going to. You could feel it (the altitude) a little bit, not necessarily physically but the time reflected it.
“This has been a once in a lifetime dream. it’s my first national team. For me its a dream come true. The people down here are great. They love the sport. I came down here as a proud American. I came to represent the USA. I feel like in some levels maybe I let them down a little. But I did what I could.”
