Jenn Suhr comes home for a Gold Medal Tour

Jenn Suhr returns to the place she calls home for a Gold Medal Tour. Admission is free at each location, check the USATF Niagara Events Calendar for more details.
During the first stop Saturday September 22nd in Fredonia, NY, where Jenn grew up, the Gold Medal Tour took to the streets. With light rain in the air up to 30 minutes before the competition, expectations were a little low, but the crowd was pumped up to see their hometown hero. A few local vaulters took to the runway prior to Jenn entering at 4.5 meters (14'9") Rick Suhr took the microphone to describe each successive height and what that meant on Jenn's road to Olympic Gold. Jenn easily cleared height after height including 4.83 meters, which Rick explained was the heighest vault by a woman in 2012. Next Jenn really pushed the bar up to 5.00m (16'4") which would set a new American Record. Unfortunately the cold and rain had taken it's toll and Jenn was not able to clear that height.

Jenn Suhr, Pole Vault: “It’s very emotional. It’s something that you work so hard for, for four years, and heartbreak and joy, and then some more heartbreak. To overcome it and come out on top is something that whenever I thought of I started crying, so I knew it was just going to be emotional, whenever I thought about how it would feel to win gold. Then I would think of how it would feel to be fourth, and I’d cry over that too. It was definitely something that I’ve wanted, I don’t think I’ve ever wanted anything so bad.”

Character of a Champion
Jenn Suhr showed what it takes to be a Champion this weekend at the New Balance Grand Prix in Boston. A week ago, Jenn was unable to clear her opening height in what was sure to have been a disappointing way to start the season. Champions don’t let that affect them very long. Get back to work, figure out what went wrong, fix it and move on. Saturday, Jenn returned to Boston and the Reggie Lewis Arena where she has found plenty of success over the years. With an easy clearance at her opening height this weekend, the monkey was off her back. The second height was not as easy bringing a change of poles and three attempts to clear the bar. Jenn had won the competition and had the bar raised to set a new American record. Tapping into her inner champion, Jenn made quick work of the 4.88 meter height. By breaking her own best indoor height becoming the first American to clear 16-0 feet, Jenn solidifies she has the character of a champion to come back one week later and win in dramatic fashion.
