In the Niagara Association, we are proud to host, along with the Niagara Walkers & New York State Parks, and support the USATF National 10K Race Walk Championships each June in Niagara Falls. This is our marquee event and also kicks off our “Summer Series,” a 10-week walking program conducted by the Niagara Walkers at beautiful Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island. Take part in the 30 minute clinic and join the group for a walk along the shores of the scenic Niagara River. For more information about the National 10K Championships and the Summer Series, go to www.niagarawalkers.org.
There are a few excellent websites and an e-list server that offers great links and loads of information related to race walking in North America and beyond.
Most comprehensive site for race walk events: www.miamivalleytrackclub.org. Sites with great info on race walking are: www.racewalk.com and www.racewalking.org. The link to the list server is: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/racewalking/.
In the Niagara Region we are also close to Canada. The Ontario Track & Field Association (www.otfa.ca) has an events calendar which does include race walking events. Some of their track meets may also have race walking divisions. Two of their larger events are the Art Keay Memorial 10K in late May (Toronto), a good tune up for the USATF 10K Race Walk Championships the following weekend. Another opportunity is the Rose City Walks in Welland in late September or early October.
If you are interested in hosting a race walking event (race or clinic) in the Niagara Association, please let me know. I’ll do what I can to help promote it and if possible attend the event.

SEAMAN & MOORE CAPTURE TITLES AT NATIONAL 10K RACEWALK CHAMPIONSHIPS At Niagara Falls State Parks’ Goat Island
Niagara Falls, NY, June 6, 2006… Tim Seaman and Jolene Moore won the gold medals at the USA Track & Field Men’s & Women’s National 10K Racewalk Championships on Saturday, June 3rd, 2006. The National Championships are sponsored by the Niagara Walkers and the Niagara Association of USA Track & Field. The event was hosted by Niagara Falls State Park and took place on Goat Island’s east end.
Both Seaman and Moore compete for the New York Athletic Club and each went home with $400 in prize money as part of USATF’s Race Walking Grand Prix events. As a two-time Olympian, Tim Seaman was the defending champion and with this championship moved into a third place tie for the number of national championship titles with a total of 29. “I’m just glad to be here and to be able to compete in such a great location,” said Seaman, of Chula Vista, California. “The Niagara Walkers do an outstanding job and this is just one of my favorite races of the year.”
The battle for second and third place in the men’s race came was tightly contested by two emerging elite competitors with Xenia, Ohio’s Matt Boyles pulling away from Rochester’s Michael Tarantino. Local Allen James of Sanborn, finished a strong fourth leading his Niagara Walkers, based in Western New York, to the National Team Championship Title with teammates Mel McGinnis of Jamestown and Dave Lawrence of Kenmore.
Jolene Moore, of Northbrook, IL, took control of the women’s race from the start and was never challenged winning her first National 10K Race Walk Championship in a personal best time. A former standout distance runner in college, Moore took up race walking four years ago and has quickly established herself as one of the top U.S. women. “I love the fast course and the great competition,” stated Moore. Long Island’s Maria Michta, 19, last year’s U.S. Junior Champion, out distanced her former Canadian Junior counterpart from Peterborough, Ontario, Rachel LaValle, 20. The third place U.S. woman was Rochester’s Laura Feller.
The women’s National Team Championship Title went to the Pegasus Walking Club based in Michigan. New York State defended its championship in the Northeast Walks Cup, a team scoring event by State / Province sponsored by the Ontario Walkers. The New York men were led by Tarantino, James and Leo Romero of Flushing. The New York women completed the sweep with a narrow one point victory over Ontario led by Michta, Feller and Erin Taylor of New York City.
